Learn Hebrew Language

Learn Hebrew through our wide-range of language programs that cater to every level of skill and experience!

The Division of Hebrew Language Instruction in Hebrew University’s Rothberg International School (RIS), established in 1965, is the largest academic institution in the world for the study of Hebrew. We offer Modern Hebrew language courses at five levels, ranging from elementary (Aleph) to advanced (Heh). In our courses, we place emphasis on acquiring essential language skills for academic studies.

During the summer we also offer a Level Vav course, which is a post-exemption level. These classes are aimed at students who have already succeeded in the Hebrew exemption exam (p’tor – Level Heh) and who are interested in increasing their proficiency in literary and academic Hebrew.

In our courses, we place emphasis on acquiring essential language skills for academic studies.

Teaching Methods

You’ll benefit from the advanced methods of our highly professional and experienced teaching faculty. The focus is on helping you internalize the language and improve your practical usage. In class, you’ll practice the four skills that underpin language competency – reading, writing, speaking, and listening – in a communicative way.

Programs

We offer intensive Modern Hebrew language courses during the summer  as well as semester-long a Hebrew language Program during the academic year.

Enrolling

Courses are available to Hebrew University degree students, full-time undergraduate or graduate study abroad students, Mechina Program and BASIS students, and external students with appropriate academic background who wish to study only Hebrew. You’ll be placed into classes according to your level and academic background.

In order to apply to one of our programs, you must have been accepted into a recognized college or university or have successfully completed at least one year of study at an accredited institution of higher education. If you are a high school graduate who has successfully completed your matriculation exams, you may also apply.
