About the Vice Provost

Jonathan Kaplan, Ph.D.

Born in Moline, Illinois, and raised in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, in western Canada, Dr. Jonathan Kaplan moved to Israel in 1972. After undergraduate and graduate studies in Jewish history and education at Hebrew University, Dr. Kaplan directed various programs at Rothberg International School while teaching classes in modern Jewish history, especially in the area of Jewish nationalism. In 1997, he left his administrative duties at the university to become Israel’s first principal of a virtual high school, and for the next decade led numerous projects in the areas of educational technology and internet-based learning, including a state-wide project to computerize schools in disadvantaged towns and neighborhoods. Dr. Kaplan returned to an executive position at RIS in 2008, leading the Division of Undergraduate Studies. In October 2014, he assumed the role of vice provost at the Rothberg International School at Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
