Smart Cities and Future Urbanization

Most people live in urban areas today. With strong immigration trend into cities, along with growing population, more than 65% of humanity is expected to live in cities by 2050. The information revolution and the developed technologies of the recent decades introduce a new concept: the smart city. In this course we will define that term and discuss further aspects and implications of the future cities on human social, economic, and environmental systems.

The course combines theoretical lectures given by leading researchers in their fields, hands-on workshop, and field trips to witness the development of smart city technologies. Located in the intersection between hi-tech, academy, and ancient history – Jerusalem is a great laboratory for the exploration of smart cities.

Course Components

• Meetings with leading experts, reviewing the visions of smart cities in fiction, arts, architecture, politics, and science.
• Field trip to Jerusalem, one of the oldest emerging smart cities.
• Dynamic classes and a practical workshop analyzing real-world issues and data.
• Visit to the beating heart of smart cities R&D – a taste of startup nation.
• Final written assignment.

You’ll be invited to participate in a wide array of trips and activities offered by HebrewU’s Office of Student Life. From tours of the Old City and the Dead Sea to checking out local festivals, you’ll build your own unique impressions and memories of Jerusalem and Israel. While living in HebrewU dormitories with other international and Israeli students, you’ll have a chance to form new friendships and get involved in campus life. Scholarships

A limited number of scholarships, based on demonstrated need or merit, are available.

This course is open to undergraduate and graduate students, as well as to mature learners with an academic background. You must be currently registered at or accepted to an accredited institution of higher education, or have successfully completed at least one year of study. English-language fluency is also required.
