This two-year program is designed for students who wish to study religion from a wide array of historical and cultural perspectives. It offers a unique opportunity to study the three great Western religions in Jerusalem, the city of their convergence and confrontation. The program focuses on the religions and cultures of the Mediterranean region in Late Antiquity and enables students to encounter a broad range of religious phenomena. In addition to their teaching and research projects, faculty members are involved in interfaith programs that include activities designed to promote understanding among the various religious communities in Israel. The program is offered in conjunction with the Department of Comparative of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
The M.A. program consists of 40 credits over four consecutive semesters, including required courses, electives and tutorials. The courses emphasize interdisciplinary and comparative research methods. Elective courses are offered in a number of areas of study, including comparative religion and Eastern religion. At the end of the first year, a concentration in one field of religious study – Christianity, Judaism, and Islam – may be chosen.
Courses from the M.A. program are also open to visiting graduate students on a one year or semester basis.
Language Requirements: Students will be expected to complete level Dalet Hebrew by the end of the second year of studies. It is recommended that students who have minimal or no knowledge of Hebrew (level Aleph) attend the Summer Ulpan.
