DanceJerusalem, a new unique program initiated by the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance (JAMD) and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Rothberg International School (RIS) combines artistic training in dance, academic study and exposure to Israel’s challenging social, historical and cultural environment.
DanceJerusalem offers university-level training in the disciplines of Classical Ballet, Contemporary Dance (including Ohad Naharin’s Gaga), Choreography, Repertoire and Improvisation. Within the framework of a comprehensive survey course, “Dance in Israel,” students create, rehearse and perform works with outstanding Israeli composers and choreographers.
In addition, students choose from a wide range of academic courses in Israel and Middle Eastern Studies, Comparative Religion, Environmental Studies, and Behavioral Sciences as well as Hebrew Language. For details see the course list.
The Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance is Israel’s creative center for performing artists and has hosted many renowned performers: Honorary Fellows include Maestri Daniel Barenboim and Mstislav Rostropovich. JAMD faculty and graduates are among the leading conductors, performers, dancers, choreographers and music educators throughout Israel, Europe and North America. With over 300 concerts and performances scheduled during the year, JAMD provides ample opportunity for its students to appear on stage. Student and teacher ensembles, orchestras, dance groups and choirs have received international acclaim and participate in festivals and special projects all over the world. JAMD is recognized by the Council for Higher Education in Israel as an Institution of Higher Education with the authority to grant the following degrees: B.Dance, B.Mus., B.Ed.Mus. and M.Mus. JAMD also awards the following joint degrees with the Hebrew University of Jerusalem: B.A.Dance, B.A.Mus. and M.A.Mus.

Program
Year Option
Dates: August 1, 2010 – June 30, 2011
The program will award 38 credits for the
following studies:
Summer Ulpan– 200 hour program of intensive Hebrew language instruction – August 1–September 21, 2010 (10 credits) and Repertoire Workshop.
Autumn Semester (October 10, 2010–January 7, 2011)
– Dance classes in the morning (6 credits) and 2 classes at the Rothberg International School in the afternoon (6 credits)
Intersession (January 19–February 10, 2011) – Intensive repertoire rehearsals with Israeli choreographers (4 credits)
Spring Semester (February 13–June 30, 2011)– Dance classes in the morning (6 credits) and 2 classes at the RIS in the afternoon (6 credits)
Autumn Semester Option
Dates: August 1, 2010 – January 7, 2011
The semester program awards 22 credits and consists of the Summer Ulpan and Autumn Semester as listed above.
Admission Requirements
Dance students who have completed 28 semester credits with a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 and above (or its equivalent) are eligible to apply.
Applicants will be required to audition, and applications will be jointly reviewed by the RIS and the JAMD.
Dance Curriculum (for Year Option)
Classical Ballet based on traditional techniques, including the Vaganova Technique and Royal Academy of Dance syllabus as well as all elements of barre, centre and full combinations from adagio through petite and grande allegro.
Contemporary Dance based on the modern dance techniques of Merce Cunningham, Martha Graham and contemporary release techniques including Gaga as developed by Ohad Naharin and taught by dancers of the BatSheva Dance Company.
Choreography: Production of original student works under the guidance of working faculty choreographers in cooperation with student composers from the JAMD’s Department of Music Composition.
Repertoire Workshops: Intensive rehearsals with contemporary Israeli choreographers creating new works with DanceJerusalem students.
Improvisation: Structured improvisation in cooperation with students from the JAMD’s
Multi-Disciplinary Music Department, students from Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design,
Department of Costume and Stage Design, and instruction in video dance techniques.
Dance in Israel: Combination of theoretical and practical study of the contemporary Israeli dance world, including workshops, performances, rehearsals, lectures and demonstrations with many of the companies and choreographers working in Israel today.
Housing
Participants are housed in the modern Scopus Student Village, adjacent to the Hebrew University campus on Mount Scopus
Extracurricular Activity Package
Students receive a full activity package, which includes opportunities for touring the country, attending seminars and workshops, and participating in cultural and social events as well as holiday celebrations and recreational clubs.
The package also provides students with a cell phone for the duration of their stay in order to ensure communication at all times.
Health and Counseling Services
Comprehensive health insurance is included in the tuition fee. Students also have access to an in-house psychologist.
